Crisis at the Criminal Bar – a Law Student’s Perspective.

As a law student, witnessing the continuing deterioration of the Criminal Bar is deeply concerning. While there are several issues, what stands out prominently to me is the shortage of criminal barristers. The Crown Court’s outstanding caseload is the largest it has ever been at over 67,000 at the start of 2024. Last year, one in twenty Crown Court trials were abandoned due to Counsel being unavailable to represent either/or both the prosecution and defence. The Criminal Bar is...

The Provision of Legal Services in the Era of Social Media

Barristers are often typecast as pin-stripe-wearing extroverts who are rather too good at self-promotion. But mention “business development”, “marketing” or “social media” in any meeting and you’re guaranteed to watch talented, experienced advocates squirm. The Rise of the English Jurisdiction as Europe’s Leading Venue for Arbitration Award Enforcement Against Recalcitrant EU States.

In the grand tradition of British legal fortitude, one cannot help but acknowledge the unbeatable supremacy of London in enforcing arbitration awards against the sometimes capricious EU member states in the international scenario. It is an irony, indeed, that while our continental brethren embroil themselves in bureaucratic entanglements and juridical contortions, London remains an unassailable stronghold of legal integrity and reliability. Nowhere is this more evident than in the context of arbitration awards, where the English courts stand unmarred...
